international love: the crete

Le Crete, Italy, April 2012 mixed media

In late April of 2012, we were invited to Italy by our friends Alka and Akhtar. They had bid on an amazing 16th century villa in Montisi, a tiny castle village in Tuscany and invited a group of friends to join them. We landed in Rome, met up with Lisa and Gaylene…who were also headed to the villa. We went to the flea market in Rome before catching the train to Tuscany.

Villa de Madelene was the name of our villa. Once there, I didn’t think I would step foot outside the place, it was so enchanting. The owner was an expat from Seattle…and interior desinger who had gutted the place and brought it back to pristine condition. A gormet kitchen, a grand dining room, sun porch, enough bedrooms for 16…all with views. The garden was a delight…terra cotta fountains, canopies of laburnum and wysteria, potted succulents, an well tended herb and artichoke garden over looking olive groves and vineyards, etc…. I had several opportunities to photograph and paint. This is the back patio of our heavenly villa. Below is a landscape The “Le Crete” (The Crete Senesi) a range of rolling hills between Sienna and southern Tuscany.
